12 Years a Slave is a 2013 historical drama
film which won three Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress for
Lupita Nyong'o, and the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for John Ridley. This
film is an adaptation of Twelve Years a Slave, the 1853 slave narrative memoir
written by Solomon Northup. Northup was a New York free African-American man. But
unfortunately, Northup was kidnapped in Washington, D.C. in 1841 and sold into
slavery.
This film mainly talks about the enslaved
life for 12 years of Northup. Northup used to be a violinist in New York. Two
white men offered him a two weeks job as a musician. After drinking with them,
Northup waked up and found him as a slave with handcuffs and shackles. He was
sold to slave trader named Freeman who gives Northup another name—Platt. The
film focused on the later life of Northup as a salve with education.
This
film is an excellent work, no wonder it wins so many rewards. The filming,
designing, and music in this film is wonderful. The main tone of this film is
black. To be honest, this film makes me uncomfortable because some description
of slavery life. It releases the darkness of that period of American society.
Slave is not human but the slave owner’s possession. What a woeful society!
This film teaches me many things about humanity since it presents many
different human feelings. I recommend this film.
Rating:5 stars.
